Winter Training Tips from Richard Faulds: Slow Down, Shoot Smart, and Have Fun

With the competition season behind us, it’s the perfect time to take a step back and think about how to train smarter over the winter months. Richard Faulds shares his advice for competition shooters looking to make the most of the quieter period:

“Take a step back from the chaos of the summer season. There is so much shooting available now that we are often (fortunately) spoilt for choice.”

“This time of year the weather won’t be particularly great, so going out and trying to achieve ‘PBs’ or other goals on a registered event is likely to end in disappointment.”

If there’s a specific problem target giving you trouble, winter is the ideal time to iron out any issues. Richard recommends practising at a venue when the weather is decent, so you can focus on improving your technique rather than waiting until a scorecard is involved and getting frustrated.

Richard also reminds us to not forget that shooting isn’t just about PBs. “It’s actually nice sometimes to just go and shoot socially with friends and enjoy some fun time, rather than being too serious.”

Use this winter wisely. It’s your chance to refine skills, enjoy the sport, and prepare yourself for the next season. A little focus, a little fun, and a lot of smart practice will pay off when competitions start again.
